The Waco Rotary Club recognized its2013 Scholarship Award recipients at the Aug. 19 meeting. Scholarship recipients are juniors or seniors in college, permanent residents or McLennan County and must have resided in McLennan County for at least two consecutive years prior to the scholarship award. All five of our winners have impressive credentials, a number of significant achievements, and are involved in multiple extracurricular activities in the community, at church and with their education institutions.

Armando Contreras

Armando is a graduate of University High and will be a senior at Texas A&M, where he is majoring in Industrial Distribution with a minor in Spanish. He is a student assistant in the Division of Administration and is involved with the Society of Latinos in Science and Engineering, the Professional Association for Industrial Distribution, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Intramural soccer. He received a $1,500 scholarship.

Kelsey Dodson

Kelsey attends Austin College where she is majoring in biology and Spanish. She serves as a Student Assembly representative and is involved with the Student Ambassador program, the Chamber Orchestra Ensemble and the Campus Ministry program. Additionally, she has worked as a campus tour guide, teaching assistant in the chemistry department and as a student assistant in the Institutional Advancement Department. She was awarded a $1,500 scholarship.

Carolyn Hoy

Carolyn is a junior at Dallas Baptist University, where she is majoring in English with a minor in communications. She has a 4.0 GPA. Her extracurricular activities include Promise International, intramural softball and various ministry activities. She also is an accomplished equestrian and has worked extensively at the Faith Rest Ranch. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Sarah Frazier

Sarah is junior at Rice University, majoring in physics and astronomy while maintaining a 3.6 GPA. She completed an internships this summer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Last summer, Sarah completed a National Science Foundation internship at the Baylor University Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics, and Engineering Research (CASPER). Her extracurricular activities include Honor Council, Peer academic advising, Rice Thresher newspaper and Brown College Theatre producing theater shows. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Katherine Goodnight

Katherine is a junior attending Texas Christian University, majoring in engineering.  She is a member of the Concert Choral Choir, JVR Honors College, the Society of Women Engineers and assisted with freshman orientation activities at TCU. During the summer, she has worked as an event planner and as an assistant at Charla Holmes Photography studios. Katherine was awarded a $1000 scholarship.
